Definitely ready to relax in my hotel room after a long day of travel. Yup that's right, I said hotel room. You didn't think just because I was leaving Spain, it meant I was headed back to the States. Well if you did you thought wrong. There is still one last stop on my journey, and I bet you are wondering where in the world I am now. Well, you will have to wait until my next blog post to find out, because for now I am going to write about my last day in Spain. But I will leave you with a little hint...
So how exactly did I spend my last day in Spain? Searching for a convent. Probably not what you were expecting, but seriously if you are ever in Seville you must do this. Next to watching the Euro Cup it was the coolest culture experience I had.
It all started when I read on this guy's blog (exploreseville.com) a list of 85 things to do in Seville. One of the things he mentioned was to buy yemas at a convent. He said it is nothing like buying dessert at your every day bakery, and boy was he right! So what makes buying dessert at a convent so special? Basically you ring a doorbell and a nun (that you will never see) will respond. Afterwards, you ask her for what you want and place your money on a turn table. Then a few minutes later the table will spin around, and the best yemas you ever had will appear! Sounds easy enough right? But as I have learned nothing is ever as easy as it seems.
After class my friend Emily and I headed out to find the San Laureano convent. We rang three different doorbells and asked a monk for directions before finding the right door. Turns out the "convent" is actually the monastery, and you have to go inside to find the right doorbell. But our struggle was worth it. First of all the yemas were so good I ate two on the spot, and the whole experience was just flat out cool. I really wish I could describe it to you better, but it was one of those you had to be there moments. However, in an attempt to included you in the experience here are some pictures from our adventure, as well as couple from the good-bye fiesta.
